RESPITE

Respite is a short break for those who are caring for a family member. Round-the-clock caregiving can bring on stress that affects the caregiver’s mental and physical health. A short interval of rest or relief can allow the caregiver to renew strength, gain perspective and maintain balance between caring for another person and caring for him/herself.

We hire respite workers to provide you with a short break or rest. Our respite workers have been screened by our staff and have passed a state and federal criminal background check. Our workers receive training in dementia care, CPR and First Aid to ensure the safety and well-being of your loved one.

A respite worker can:

  • Communicate with a person who has dementia
  • Assist the person with activities of daily living
  • Assist with bathing
  • Prepare and serve light meal or snack
  • Remind the person to take medication
  • Engage in activities to keep the person safe
  • Respond to an emergency
  • Provide transportation for enjoyable outings

We serve anyone with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder and over 60 years old.

Respite Training Video

The training video "A Respite Journal" is available for purchase. The training video shows how to care for an elder through the eyes of a respite worker. The video is 48 minutes long and is available in VHS format. The cost is $89.00 and includes shipping and handling.

For more information about the respite program or to purchase a respite training video, e-mail Karen Cobb.

Consumer Directed Personal Care Services

The Alzheimer's Resource Agency of Alaska has a Consumer Directed Personal Care Program in order to help a person have a more active role in the selection of home care services. Elderly individuals who are eligible for Medicaid can now choose to manage their own Personal Care Services through this new program. The Consumer Directed Care Program allows a person to manage their own care; including hiring, scheduling, training and supervising their own provider. If someone is unable to manage their own services, they can appoint a personal representative.

To be eligible for services, a person must be over the age of 60 years old or of any age with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder, eligible for Alaska Medicaid, eligible for home care services or need assistance with activities of daily living and be able to select and supervise a personal care provider or have a legal guardian who is able and willing to make choices on their behalf. If you would like more details regarding this program please call our In-Home Services Manager at 561-3313 or e-mail Karen Cobb.
