SUMMARY:Statewide Grief Support Group
DESCRIPTION:We most often think of grief as a response to the death of someone close. It is that\, but it is more. For caregivers\, it issomething that is continuous\, daily\, often lasting for years before the passing of the one for whom they’re providing care. In the emotionally jumbled\, stressful experience of being a caregiver\, who listens and understands? Alzheimer’s Resource Alaska does\, and we are\noffering a place and time for caregivers to be heard\, to share thoughts and feelings\, and find solace. Join us. \nWe offer compassionate grief support groups on the first and third Thursdays of each month\, led with care by Gay Wellman through Zoom. We welcome anyone navigating the loss of a loved one\, as well as caregivers and others who continue to experience anticipatory grief due to Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. \nBecause the groups meet online\, people from communities across the state can come together to share stories\, receive understanding\, and find comfort in the company of others who truly get what they are going through. Whether your grief is fresh or something you have carried for a while\, you will find a place here where your feelings are honored and you do not have to face them alone. \nYou are welcome just as you are. \nWith questions or to sign up\, reach out to Gay Wellman at gwellman@alzalaska.org.

Caregiving can be demanding\, and it’s easy to put your own interests aside. This book club is an opportunity to slow down\, enjoy a good book\, and connect with others who understand the caregiving journey. Read at your own pace\, then join us each month to share insights\, discuss the reading\, celebrate successes\, talk through challenges\, and support one another in a welcoming\, judgment free environment. \nREGISTER HERE!  \nOur first featured book is Aging with Grace by Dr. David Snowdon\, the groundbreaking account of the landmark Nun Study\, one of the most influential studies on aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Together\, we’ll explore what this remarkable research teaches us about cognitive health\, resilience\, purpose\, and the factors that may help support brain health throughout life. \nThe club meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.\, beginning August 26\, and is open to participants in Fairbanks and statewide via Zoom. \nFor our first discussion in August\, we’ll cover Chapters 1 through 3. During our September meeting\, we’ll discuss 4-6\, in October we’ll discuss chapters 7-9\, and we’ll close out the book in November with chapters 10-13. We’ll begin a new book club in January with Tangled but Sarah Leavitt – stay tuned for more. \nBooks are available through Amazon\, ThriftBooks\, Kindle\, and other online retailers. You may also be able to borrow the ebook or audiobook through the Libby app with your local library card or check with the Noel Wien Library or your local library for available copies. \nWhether you’re a caregiver\, healthcare professional\, or simply interested in healthy aging and brain health\, we invite you to read\, reflect\, and connect with us. We look forward to learning and growing together. \nRegister today via Zoom.
