Art Brings Us Together: A Free Dementia Friendly Art Class

Join Alzheimer’s Resource Alaska and local Alaskan artist Rhonda Scott for Art Brings Us Together, a free painting class created especially for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias and their caregivers.

Art provides a meaningful opportunity to explore creativity, encourage self expression, connect with others, and simply enjoy the moment. During this guided painting class, Rhonda will lead participants through a step by step creative experience in a welcoming and supportive environment. No previous art experience is needed, and all materials will be provided.

For Rhonda, this class is especially meaningful. Her mother lived with dementia, and Rhonda and her family turned to Alzheimer’s Resource Alaska for resources and support throughout their journey. That experience gave her a firsthand understanding of how deeply dementia can affect not only the individual living with it, but their entire family.

Today, Rhonda continues to honor her mother through her artwork and her commitment to giving back. Each year, she donates a portion of her art sales to Alzheimer’s Resource Alaska in her mother’s memory. Teaching Art Brings Us Together combines two things that are incredibly important to her: art and giving back to families affected by dementia.

This class is limited to 8 individuals living with dementia and 8 caregivers, allowing everyone to enjoy a comfortable and engaging creative experience together.

Artwork created during the class will also have an opportunity to be shared with the Anchorage community. Pieces will be displayed at local Anchorage businesses throughout November in recognition of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, celebrating creativity while helping bring greater awareness to dementia in our community.
