Caregiving 101: The GEMS – Using Skills That Make a Difference

May 14 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Understanding how dementia changes the brain can transform the way we provide care. The GEMS: Using Skills that Make a Difference introduces Teepa Snow’s GEMS® model, a practical framework that helps caregivers recognize retained abilities and adapt their approach to better support each individual. In this Caregiving 101 class, participants will learn how to “see the gem” in each person and respond in ways that reduce stress, build trust, and foster more positive daily interactions.

Through real world examples and hands on strategies, caregivers will gain tools to communicate more effectively, respond to changing needs, and create supportive environments that honor dignity and independence. This class is ideal for family caregivers, friends, and professionals looking for compassionate, skill based techniques that truly make a difference in the lives of those living with dementia and those who care for them.

This event is free and offered via Zoom. Contact Janice Downing for more information at jdowning@alzalaska.org.
