Financial Decisions and Family Caregiving

Financial Decisions and Family Caregiving — September 12, 2023

Marietta Hall, CFP®, from Alaska Wealth Advisors, visited Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska to discuss financial planning for caregivers. She helped participants identify the financial decisions they would need to make at the point of symptom onset, so they could create a plan to pay for the care of their loved one and ensure their own financial survival. Hall leads participants through a workbook that guides them through creating a financial plan. The workbook also helps participants prepare for meetings with legal, financial, and medical professionals.

In this video, we explore answers to questions such as:

  • What information should you get out to your family and friends, and when and how to do it?
  • What documents do you have in place, and what do you still need?
  • What are the financial triggers for considering your assets and spending for a future Medicaid claim?
  • How to decipher a Long Term Care policy if you have one and activate it for care.
  • When and how should you step in to help with finances in the most supportive and protective way.
  • What if you are already caring for a loved one? How do you plan for their care if you are incapacitated?
  • How do you prioritize the list of everything you need to do?
